Opening with a pan down to a pink building as a familiar tune plays in the background, this trailer then takes us inside to see a pig reading a newspaper. Then we see a dragon running towards the pig who gets smacked in the face with a sack of money. As the pig looks at the money with glee, his face is promptly used as a footstool by said dragon to leap at a sword in the air. As soon as the dragon grabs the weapon, he’s hit by a bolt of lightning, and out of the smoke, a mouse charges up a wall, holding that same sword. All rendered in an adorable art style.
Yup, there’s going to be a Wonder Boy remake – specifically 1989’s Sega Master System title Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap. This will be the franchise’s first new release in 22 years, and comes from new French studio Lizardcube and will be published by DotEmu. From the early gameplay footage, we can see that they have remade Monster Town in a hand-drawn graphic style. Each of the animal forms demonstrate their respective special abilities (except the Lion’s Amazing Arc Swing), with fluid animations and a HUD that actually tells you which Subweapon you’re using fills the listeners witha sense of, well…. Wonder at what awaits them in this upcoming remake. If the developers can maintain this degree of quality until release date (still up in the air), Wonder Boy may get the glorious return fans have been waiting for. There’ll be 6 unique forms for the hero, including Lion, Hawk, and Piranha transformations.
The release window is still unknown, but the game will be making its way to PC and consoles (presumably that includes PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and maybe Wii U). You can subscribe to the developers’ newsletter here for any updates and further details.
