Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS will be adding Final Fantasy VII‘s iconic protagonist Cloud Strife in the future. Despite never officially starring in a game on a Nintendo system, Cloud will be joining the cast of the company’s all-star fighting game.

Super Smash Bros

At the end of tonight’s Nintendo Direct, we saw a familar set of lights swirling about as the classic opening track to Final Fantasy VII played. Sure enough, we see Cloud and his Buster Sword take the stage to begin slashing at Nintendo characters.

Cloud will also have his outfit from the movie Final Fantasy VII Advent Children as an alternate costume. There’ll also be a stage available based on FFVII‘s hi-tech city of Midgar; complete with eidolons such as Odin and Bahamut as stage hazards. Oh and Chocobo costumes for your Mii Fighters as well.

Super Smash Bros

There’s still no details on when Cloud will be released, or how much he and the other Final Fantasy VII content will cost, but the Nintendo Direct does end with a tease, announcing that there’ll be a special Super Smash Bros broadcast in December.

That is strange. Wouldn’t it make more sense to include a character who’s actually been in a FF game on Nintendo consoles? I guess we have another Snake situation on our hands.

    • EdgyDude

Much like Snake it’s a special situation. Snake passes the “has to be in a Nintendo game” rule over The Twin Snakes and Cloud passes it on a technicality by FF Theater Rhythm

Still, it would make more sense to include someone from FF6 or even Chrono. I just find it a bit ironic to include a character from the game that killed the N64.
