Tonight’s Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary party was host to the unveiling of two new games from SEGA’s flagship franchise. Sonic Team’s untitled Project Sonic 2017 is coming to Nintendo NX, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in Holidary 2017. The CG trailer doesn’t give away much, but it will reunite the modern Sonic the Hedgehog with the Classic Sonic seen in Sonic Generations.
Meanwhile, fans of the Genesis-era of 2D Sonic the Hedgehog games can look forward to Sonic Mania. Helmed by Christian Whitehead who gave Sonic CD and the original trilogy a remarkable upgrade for mobiles; this new game will feature remixed classic levels such as Green Hill Zone, while also adding all new levels featuring Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles as playable characters in their classic 2D sprite incarnations. Sonic Mania is set to release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in Spring 2017.
The live event also played host to trailers for Sonic’s appearance in LEGO Dimensions; Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, and the second season of the animated series. A particular highlight for fans was a live concert by Sonic Adventure composer Jun Senoue and his band Crush 40 – playing all the fan favorites like “Open Your Heart” and “Live and Learn.” As for the lows, the audio production was atrocious for a majority of the stream, and there was some lengthy promotion for Hello Kitty and tacos (seriously). But that’s in the past now, and we can enjoy this little glimpse of the follow-up to Sonic Generations some more. Maybe Classic Sonic’s future really will be great.
