Kickstarter game This Is The Police is a concept that immediately pulls me in. Players will assume the role of Jack Boyd; a police chief with 180 days left until retirement. His career is about to come to a close, and rather than go quietly he wants to cash-in big: score $500,000 in his pocket any which way he can. Drugs, arms, Mafia deals, bribery; none of it is out of the question for a cop who wants to get his hands dirty. Of course, Jack will need to keep up appearances in his day job. Players will also have to fulfill the role of police chief in this strategy game in which they must manage the police force of the town of Freeburg. At the same time, decisions will have to be made; between answering the mayor’s orders, to managing criminal affairs, and picking the right words at press conferences.
This Is The Police is being developed by independent developers Weappy Studio in Belarus. It stars voice actor Jon St. John, famous for his role as Duke Nukem. The Kickstarter campaign’s goal is $25,000 US Dollars by the 26th of February. If successful, the game is aiming for a December 2015 PC release. I’m hoping it’s successful. The mature subject matter and seedy player role means This Is The Police, much like Papers, Please has the potential to be an engaging moral conflict that players will be thrilled to experience.
