Following some leaked footage, Niantic, the developer of upcoming free-to-play mobile game Pokemon Go, has shared the first details on the gameplay of the title. Previously it was only known that the game would allow you to capture Pokemon by taking your mobile device out in to the world, but now we know some of the finer details of the system. Certain types of Pokemon will only appear in specific places, like water Pokemon near bodies of water. Your phone will then vibrate and you can use your touch screen to throw a virtual pokeball and catch the Pokemon. Other “special items,” can be found at PokeStops in the real world such as “public art installations, historical markers, and monuments,” though no specific places were divulged. The game takes ideas and elements from Niantic’s previous game, Ingress which has the player capture portals in real life locations. As you play Pokemon Go, your trainer level will increase allowing you to find more powerful Pokemon and items. Some Pokemon can be evolved if the same species is caught on multiple occasions. Pokemon Eggs, which can be found at PokeStops, will hatch after players walk a certain distance. Pokemon Go players will be encouraged to join one of three teams and engage in Gym battles with other teams. A Pokemon Go “field test” will take place soon, but no field tests have been announced outside of Japan.
I for one, am intrigued to find out what kind of Pokemon I would find wandering around my estate…
