Yosuke Saito took to the stage at Square Enix’s E3 conference to announce the next title in the NieR series on the Playstation 4…or not announce as the case may be – several words in the supposed sub-title appearing to fade in and out. The original Nier games – Nier Replicant being Japan exclusive – began as an offshoot of the Drakengard series, following on from the final ending of the first Drakengard game. Fans will be pleased to know that Yoko Taro returns to direct and Keiichi Okabe of Nier and Drakengard 3 will be composing the game’s soundtrack. That’s the game’s official reveal trailer below:
Not much was revealed in the trailer beyond some of the game’s staff but Yosuke Saito, who will be the game’s producer, invited Yoko Taro on stage (wearing a hilarious Emil mask) alongside Itsushi Inaba of Platinum Games to explain Platinum’s role in the new Nier. Square Enix asked Platinum to “instil new strength in the Nier franchise by levering Platinum games’ area of expertise, action.”
Yoko Taro’s previous game Drakengard 3, was hampered by an incredibly low-budget, resulting in appalling frame rate drops and some of the lowest quality textures I’ve seen on the PS3. Perhaps Square Enix is looking to Platinum to inject a bit more well deserved polish for fans of Taro’s projects this time around. Square Enix is yet to reveal an official subtitle or full name for the game but we are told to expect more from Square Enix and Platinum this coming Autumn.
