More info on the next game in the Hitman franchise was shown at Square Enix’s E3 conference. Christian Elverdam explained on the E3 stage that IO Interactive has taken a slightly different approach with the new game. The studio is planning ongoing updates and events, including new locations, missions and unique assassinations which can only be attempted once by players and for a limited time only. This ongoing support sounds similar to how many MMO games operate but it was unclear as to whether there would be any true multiplayer in the game, though online leader-boards are sure to be a feature. Community created hits are a confirmed feature.
Elverdam described the game as going deeper into the sandbox play style of the previous Hitman games with a more open feel (though he did not use the term ‘open world’) Confirmed locations include Paris, Italy and Marrakesh which will be more populated than previous games with every NPC having a name. Taking a look at the trailer, which is highly scripted but still looks to be quite representative of gameplay, we can see that disguises will still play a big role in the game. Your pre-mission loadout will be unlocked gradually depending on your performance and environment specific kills, such as the chandelier falling or using poison when disguised as the bartender will be available.
IO Interactive was hit with lay-offs in 2013 following financial difficulties at Square Enix, Hitman has been their sole project since that time. Here’s hoping this new Hitman will be a success and get the studio back on track. (Though hopefully not to make more Kane & Lynch games)
Christian Elverdam has stated the game, simply entitled ‘Hitman‘ will release on Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC, December 8th.
