Today saw the debut of a new trailer for upcoming anime fighter Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4. The game, due in Autumn for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, will adapt the final climactic battles of the Naruto manga series. As a bonus, the game will also see downloadable content inspired by The Last: Naruto the Movie, and Boruto; two anime feature films set after the events of the Naruto storyline. The new trailer and press release for the game shows that fans who preorder will be the first to get Naruto and Sasuke’s playable versions based on The Last, as well as costumes for Sakura and Hinata based on the movie.
However, the press release proudly proclaims that a further two playable characters; Boruto, and Sarada, as well as Kakashi’s The Last costume, will be exclusive to players who preorder, and will in fact not be sold at a later date. Compare this to a recent example, where Mortal Kombat X offered playable DLC character Goro as a preorder bonus. Fans who preordered got him, and those who didn’t can still buy him now at any time for an additional price.
I’ve often made the argument that a fighting game is its characters. While Naruto SUN Storm 4 will no doubt follow series tradition and offer dozens of playable fighters, limiting 2 of them to those who buy the game before launch is extremely scummy if it means people who don’t preorder can never get the complete range of content. Let’s hope Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2 realise how unfair this will be to fans who can’t buy the game at launch.
