Metroid Prime: Federation Force Gets Fans Thumbs-Down

Nintendo’s beloved sci-fi series Metroid is finally returning after a 5-year absence…as a 4-player handheld co-op game. Yes, Metroid Prime: Federation Force was unveiled today during Nintendo’s Digital Event, with series star Samus Aran nowhere in sight. The game features stylized chibi renditions of Galactic Federation soldiers. The game will also include Metroid Prime: Blast Ball; a first-person shooter fused with soccer first shown at the Nintendo World Championships a few days ago.

Considering there’s been nothing from the Metroid series since 2010’s poorly received Wii installment Other M, fans were holding out hope for a return to the beloved Metroid Prime series of FPS games. However, not like this, if the response to the trailer is anything to go by.

Federation Force

This isn’t the first time the Metroid series has branched out into unexpected territory, though Metroid Prime Pinball for the Nintendo DS remains largely forgotten at this point. Sadly, dreams of Samus making her triumphant return on the Wii U were dashed today; replaced by a strange portable multiplayer game of space soldiers vs space pirates. Metroid Prime: Federation Force comes to Nintendo 3DS sometime in 2016. Any further objections?

Other M thumbs down

I thought as much…

Take the Metroid Prime tag off this game and launch it as a new IP. I absolutely cannot fathom that Nintendo would in any way expect a positive reaction from the community to this.

    • Ms_Fortune

They might have, Nintendo has shown time and time again how incredibly out of touch with the community they are.

      • Niwjere

Yet, somehow, Nintendo continues to get a free pass in virtually all games media (except here, fortunately for my sanity). They can apparently do no wrong.

Virtually no one criticizes Amiibos for being obviously bullshit (seriously, forced scarcity of DLC is the worst move in DLC history).

Virtually nobody said anything about Splatoon‘s absolutely horrendous matchmaking balance problems, or the fact that the game launched with five goddamn maps — a cardinal sin for a primarily multiplayer title.

Virtually no one mentions that Nintendo keeps rehashing their family-friendly IPs and only their family-friendly IPs, having left virtually all of their more mature franchises to rot on the vine years ago.

Virtually no one mentions that Satoru Iwata is an absolutely bafflingly inept CEO who has ruined far more Nintendo efforts than he’s helped. (there’s a link in here, but NicheGamer’s comment formatting isn’t making it stand out — good reading, though)

I could go on and on. It’s like we permit this bullshit to happen because Nintendo puts on an air of being this fun-loving company that represents our childhoods. It is HIGH FUCKING TIME that the family-friendly facade got stripped away and Nintendo’s feet got held to the same fire everyone else’s are.

Once again Nintendo demonstrates their uncanny ability to completely misread their fan’s desires.

    • Winston_from_the_Ministry

Thank god. I would hate to see Nintendo follow the advice they’re offered by children on the internet. Think of everything we’d have missed out on.

  • Winston_from_the_Ministry

Sounds like the same small but vocal group of whingers who think for some reason their opinions should be regarded despite never having run so much as a whelk stall.

    • Ninjagai

I guess if you’re talking about the type of fan who would click on a Nintendo trailer, I guess that audience is small nowadays. Maybe if they listened more, they’d actually have fans.

      • Winston_from_the_Ministry

        Come again?

      • Winston_from_the_Ministry

Why didn’t they listen to you eh? The fools….

  • A-bob-omb

The game does indeed look awful for the Metroid license, and when Nintendo are sitting on such a well-known Ip with a female protagonist, it just beggars belief.
