“If we’re really gonna discuss how good Metal Gear Solid is, we have to discuss the boss fights, in serious depth. Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 & 3…all have exceptional boss fights…”

Terrible Boss Fights

In part 2 of our in-depth Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots review, we re-play the terrible boss fights. The Beauty and the Beast Corps, Vamp, Suicide Gekko: they were quite awful, but don’t just take our word for it, see it for yourself! We recorded the broken AI, discussed the clunky controls, bizarre design choices and explained the simple and easy ways these boss fights could have been better. We were pleasantly surprised by one boss fight in particular but once again, we ultimately found that the more we play Metal Gear Solid 4…the worse it gets.

Please don’t include the guy on the right in any more videos. He’s super opinionated and doesn’t even try to make a case, just says stuff like it’s undeniable fact. Super annoying hyperbole.

I’d love to get a discussion going about what you disagreed with if you found any of our points wrong or invalid! Genuinely =)

Plebs. All of the boss fights across the MGS games were terrible. They force the player into head-on confrontations and mar what would otherwise be decent stealth games. In that regard, the B&B Corps from MGS4 were actually BETTER than previous boss battles, because stealth was still an option to some degree.

Stealth is only an option in the Vamp and Crying Wolf fight and completely breaks the game in both fights. As we said at the start of the video, the fights from MGS 1, 2 & 3 take the mechanics present in the game and expand upon them in ways you might not expect (or even know about in some cases) they push the boundaries of what you might expect of such a simple stealth action game and in that way that actually challenges the player. These fights I can beat every single time on the hardest difficulty with no problems whatsoever as they are all ‘shooter’ style bosses. If you enjoyed MGS4’s bosses, that’s brilliant! So did I the first time I played them but I totally disagree with your comments and I get the impression that you’re not a fan of boss fights in general by what you said. (Is Giygas an exception?) =D

I take exception to boss fights that jarringly turn what was ostensibly a stealth game into a generic action game. If a stealth game has unavoidable direct combat sections, then it’s not much a stealth game is it?
