Continuing their trend of bringing practically every mainline Final Fantasy title to modern platforms, Square Enix today revealed that an HD Remaster of the PlayStation 2’s Final Fantasy XII will be coming in 2017. This Final Fantasy XII HD edition will be titled Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age and will feature the gameplay improvements found on the Japan-exclusive International Zodiac Job System edition from 2007. The License Board system for character upgrades has been massively overhauled, with 12 different Boards present to build each character around a Job class. There will also be new features such as the ability to control the previously AI-only Esper summons, and Guest party members.
In addition to an HD coat of paint for the visuals, the game will also boast improved loading times, and high quality voice audio (the original had some issues with tinny dialogue). A re-recorded orchestral soundtrack is also present, and you can switch back to the original if the new music isn’t to your liking. So far the remaster is only confirmed for PlayStation 4, but considering the previously PlayStation-exclusive Final Fantasy X remaster just came out on Steam, PC fans may not have to miss out for long.
Speaking as a fan, Final Fantasy XII has proven rather divisive over the years. None can argue that the game is jam-packed with content (such as the brilliant Hunting side-quests), but in terms of story and characters, it’s often derided for a cast of main characters who have little relevance with the wider plot. Protagonist Vaan is particularly disliked, especially as he replaced more suitable candidates for the leading role such as the dashing sky pirate Balthier. Nonetheless, now that the game is going beyond the PlayStation 2, and carrying a bunch of refinements, perhaps the game will be more welcomed by gamers when The Zodiac Age releases in 2017.
