It’s here, and it’s real. PlayStation Experience tonight gave us our first look at Final Fantasy VII Remake gameplay and it is utterly gorgeous. Barret is sporting some snazzy shades; Midgar’s streets are both gloomy and dazzling, and Wedge looks better and sounds worse than ever.
We get a good look at Cloud running through the dim streets of Midgar, before a battle against Shinra troops breaks out. This trailer is where we see that Final Fantasy VII‘s combat is very different from before. A menu is still displayed in the lower-left (even if it looks like a placeholder at this point), and Cloud and Barret appear to freely move around the battlefield. Attacks and spells look to be performed in similar fashion to action RPGs – specifically like the upcoming Final Fantasy XV.
Other similarities include Cloud edging his way through gaps and rubble much like Noctis does in Episode Duscae. It’s still early days for the Final Fantasy VII Remake, so a lot can change between now and the time it eventually releases. Maybe by that point, it’ll evolve beyond what we’ve seen today, and perhaps even offer the option of the original Active Time Battle system for purists like myself.
