Cultural Appropriation of Tetris

Tetris. An all-time classic, loved the world over. But I don’t care how much you appreciate this game; you are participating in yet another act of cultural appropriation by Western society. Alexey Pajitnov’s puzzler has been exploited and reproduced countless times, with the most recent being Ubisoft’s ‘Tetris Ultimate’. Yes, it’s broken, but that’s what you deserve, you greedy scumbags.

As popular as Tetris is, the subtext and messages fly right over many ignorant players’ heads. Ben Kuchera of reputable gaming website Polygon describes the Russian masterpiece as being “about the impossibility of imposing order onto never-ending chaos.” He further explains that  “the music and theme itself is INCREDIBLY political in Tetris.” Any educated professional can tell you that world music and a game about falling blocks indeed carries significant political connotations.

The Soviet Union may no longer live, but that does not give the West the right to continue exploiting this “Soviet Mind Game” block puzzler. Between companies like Nintendo, Capcom and Arika, the cultural appropriation of Tetris has gone on for too long; all for American capital gain. Don’t even get me started on ‘Hatris’. That product of the hatriarchy is so gross that Alexey Pajitnov is still rotating in his Tetromino-coffin.

  • No Excuses VTW

I managed to hold it in until I got to the word “reputable”, at which point I burst out laughing.

  • Erthwjim

I realize this is satire, but some people probably hold the view this article portrays (IE Ben Kuchera) and he should know that the math puzzle Tetris was based on, happens to have originated not in Russia but from a bloke in England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentomino). So yeah, take that Ben Kuchera, them’s called facts.

The original versions of Tetris didn’t even have music. The “INCREDIBLY political” music based on Korobeiniki was added to Nintendo’s original Game Boy release in 1989, ie. 5 years after the game was created, by a Japanese person.

Old Ben is doing his best to be wrong about everything.

      • Rodrigo_Girao

Russian-style music and imagery were added by Spectrum Holobyte (computer versions) and Atari Games (arcade version), one year before Nintendo released their version.

How deliciously ironic for me to be calling names. Thank you very much for the clarification, that’s what I get for only doing a cursory WP search. Kuchera is still wrong about everything!

          • A Real Libertarian

Don’t forget that Korobeiniki was written 50 years before the Russian Revolution.

Must have been those Godless Reds and their Time Machine.

      • Erthwjim

That just shows that they should be going after the music world not gaming. Damn classic musicians with their communist music.

        • Fatherless

As a musician I am incredibly grateful that the SJW crowd hasn’t started critiquing video game music.

          • Erthwjim

Music was already attacked by SJWs, they just failed miserably because everyone loves music and it’s been around long enough to weather such attacks. Gaming is still relatively new compared to other forms of media and is much smaller (although maybe not monetarily anymore) so SJWs feel they can get their foot in the door and still influence it, although hopefully they’re learning they’re a little off base and don’t have the influence they hoped they would.

          • Fatherless

I guess I mean that Anita hasn’t started attacking video game music.

That product of the hatriarchy is so gross that Alexey Pajitnov is still rotating in his Tetromino-coffin.

But Alexey Pajitnov is still alive.
