The nominees for this year’s Game Critics Awards Best Of E3 have been unveiled and EA appears to have come away with having the highest chance at going away with the most illustrious honors. Star Wars: Battlefront has been nominated for five awards based on the footage that was shown during EA’s press conference at E3 last month – the nominations being: Best Console Game, Best PC Game, Best Action Game, Best Online Multiplayer & Best Of Show. Following close behind with four nominations is Guerilla Games’ post-apocalyptic robot dinosaur-fest in Horizon Zero Dawn as well as Bethesda’s Fallout 4.
But it was EA who came up trumps on the publisher side too with a combined eleven nominations in total, though admittedly they share that spot with Sony Computer Entertainment – Bethesda close behind in third place on seven nominations. The winners will be revealed on July 7th this coming Tuesday, though it has to be said – regardless of who wins – there’s bound to be a degree of skepticism and otherwise warranted doubt as to the GCA’s decision in continuing such a series of awards. Those interested in knowing who it is that will comprise this year’s judging panel can find a list of media outlets here.
With the plague of controversy and criticism surrounding initial reveals of games that pop up in almost every recent E3 of the past few years – and the inevitable talk of downgrading that surfaces as such games get closer to their release dates – you have to ask yourself whether or not ‘Best of E3’ is indeed a worthwhile crown to fit atop many a game’s head…or perhaps, credibly less moral or ethical in the long term for the industry as a whole. Let’s face it, this is the same ‘award ceremony’ that not only gave Watch_Dogs Special Commendations in both Graphics as well as Innovation in 2012 (look how that turned out), but have now offered up the potential for an award (likely due to its acclaimed status) for the likes of Dark Souls 3 in Best RPG based on little more than an official reveal trailer. But what do you think? Do you see E3 Awards as worthwhile honors or misguided vanity? Stay tuned for news on the winners and losers.
