Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel writer Anthony Burch has departed from Gearbox Software. Burch revealed on Twitter that he is leaving for Los Angeles to write for an original comedy series streaming on Hulu. The currently untitled series will be produced by Freddie Wong and RocketJump; the creators responsible for popular web series Video Game High School.

It is currently unknown who will be the lead writer for Gearbox’s next Borderlands project. Anthony Burch initially rose to fame with his sister Ashly Burch in Destructoid and GameTrailers comedy series Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin’? Anthony took over writing duties for Gearbox’s Borderlands games with the first sequel Borderlands 2, where his sister also provided the voice of new character Tiny Tina.

Burch’s stint in the franchise has been divisive to say the least. Some fans appreciated the new flavor of humor, while others derided the attempts at comedy for its abundant use of references to pop culture and internet memes.

    So, no more memes?

  • The Seth MaxFarlane of video games has left to make comedy.

Willing to bet that he left because he was asked to leave, at which point he took literally the first thing that came his way in order to save face.

He’s bitten the hand that feeds him before, and it’s not too out there to believe he did it again.

Can next Borderlands be a decent game then? No more Memelands pls.

  • Arty McBert

Good riddance. Maybe now Borderlands won’t have cringeworthy scripting and stupid meme spouting every five minutes.

  • Tyrannikos

Oh, good – Burch and Wong on one project means I can avoid them both simultaneously.

  • Doc Hammer

I read that entire bullshit link that Cucky the clown tweeted and I cannot even begin to figure out anything about their project. That post is a negative information space. It says a lot, but literally nothing noteworthy.

  • Zanard Bell

Best news I’ll hear all day. Good riddance to that SJW trash. Maybe Borderlands 3 can be saved, after all.

And nothing of value was lost.

I hope that the next Borderlands will rely less on references and Internet memes. There were a few instances of unique black comedy that didn’t depend on referencing any other work, and those jokes were decent. I hope to see more like that in the next game.

  • I admit, I actually found Borderlands 2’s story great and enjoyed Captain Scarlett but I think it’s a good thing Gearbox is getting rid of Anthony Burch; I actually thought his sister did a good performance with Tiny Tina but I think with Anthony Burch gone, we don’t need to worry about the writer shoving their beliefs up the arses of players and depending on who they hire as the next writer for Borderlands 3, it could be interesting, funnier or maybe a hella’ lot darker than the previous games.

Thank fuck, I couldn’t stand Borderlands 2, mostly because of the shitty jokes.

The original had way better writing. I might actually look forward to Borderlands 3 now.

    “Comedy”

    Fucking kill me now.
