Earlier today, WWE Games’ Twitter account revealed the first three playable members of the roster in their upcoming WWE 2K17 game (in addition to Bill Goldberg, pictured above, the former WCW megastar who is available as a pre-order bonus). They were announced at E3 via the artwork of Rob Schamberger, long-time provider of artwork for WWE merchandise and other memorabilia.
Two of the three announced characters won’t come as a big surprise. Fifteen-time WWE Champion John Cena – still the biggest name on the current WWE roster – and WWE Hall of Famer the Ultimate Warrior. The big news is that Sasha Banks, former NXT Women’s Champion, will be making her WWE game debut. Last year’s WWE 2K16 attracted a lot of criticism for not featuring the “Four Horsewomen” of NXT – Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, Bayley and Charlotte – amongst the wrestlers on the roster, even as downloadable content. It’s possible that Sasha Banks’ early reveal was done in order to reassure WWE fans of their inclusion in this year’s title.
Going forward, the interesting thing to find out is how many of WWE’s recent “big” acquisitions – AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows – will make the cut in the base game and who will be saved for DLC. If previous games are anything to go by, the cut-off point for debuting wrestlers to appear in each year’s game is around WrestleMania. If that’s the case for 2K17, it means Styles will likely be in, Gallows and Anderson will almost certainly be DLC and Nakamura will have just made the deadline. Time will tell on all four and it may even be possible that Rob Schamberger will continue his mural and give us more roster reveals before E3 is over.
WWE 2K17 will be released in October.
